The PTU-54-EXT module is a protective module that offers the highest protective effectiveness thanks to MOSFET technology. It has been designed for surge protection of LAN devices installed outdoors, on metal structures or poles, and in industrial environments, where, in addition to typical surges, there are also high potential differences between local grounding points.
The LSA (Krone) connectors used on the unprotected side create a dual functionality in the form of a patch panel and surge protection. Additionally, LSA connectors have a higher impact resistance than RJ-45 sockets, which is important in the case of high-value surges.
The MOSFET fuses used disconnect the protected side circuits from the unprotected side in a very short time, allowing the maximum amount of surge to be diverted to the ground, resulting in the voltage received by the protected devices being several times lower than in the case of conventional solutions. Furthermore, all equalizing impulses generated between connected LAN devices during discharges and the activation of generators, UPSs, or heavy industrial machines are eliminated.
Like the PRO series, it has increased impact resistance for each wire of the cable. Direct discharge of large charges without intermediary elements (looping through transformers or coupling through diode circuits) ensures a total protection level of 2.5kA per wire.
Compared to previous series, it offers significantly better transmission and durability parameters for long-term current loads. Printed circuits with impedance control and higher quality RJ-45 sockets provide lower crosstalk and attenuation of transmission lines, while new solutions and components deliver proper handling and protection for PoE up to 60W (HiPoE).
Based on the PTU-54-EXT/PoE modules, surge protection systems for LAN networks of 10Mbit or 100Mbit can be built, serving to protect computers, LAN switches, PLC controllers, industrial television systems, and other devices installed on grounded metal structures.
Additional equipment includes circuits that protect devices powered by passive or active PoE lines, where damage may occur due to induced surge currents during lightning strikes, but also due to damage to the PoE power supply. The PTF-54 series modules work with PoE power in many IEEE standards, including: 802.3af, 802.3at, and 802.3bt - type 3 (HiPoE, UPOE). MOSFET technology is not used in PoE circuits; if it is also necessary, the PTU-64 system should be used - dedicated to Gigabit Ethernet networks.
The protection module is compatible with Ethernet networks 10Base-T and 100Base-TX and can be used with UTP or FTP cabling, category 5, 5e, 6, and 6a - thanks to the use of shielded sockets, it ensures full continuity of the cable shielding. Due to its use solely for PoE power, pairs 4,5 and 7,8 have been grouped - the module cannot be a component involved in measuring the parameters of category 5e, 6, or higher cabling. For installations requiring measurements involving protectors, PTU-64 products are recommended.
The module can be mounted in metal enclosures PTU/PTF-5-MBOX, PTU/PTF-5-MBOX/DIN (1 piece), and in panels PTU/PTF-5-RACK (up to 4 pieces), creating multi-channel protective systems or, by using different modules, systems with varied purposes and protection levels.
The grounding of the PTU-54 module is done using the mounting screws of the Rack enclosure, making any expansion or replacement of the module very easy and not requiring additional actions. The entire device is connected to the ground using the included wire, which is attached to a common grounding point.
Since the beginning of 2021, a new version of the product PTF-54-EXT+/PoE has been introduced, featuring improved parameters and additional protection from MOSFET fuses. Details are included in the user manual.
The product is tested according to categories D1, C2, C1, B2. It is intended for use at the boundaries of zones LPZ0/LPZ1 or higher.
