The use of surge protection devices is important for many reasons, but one of the key ones is to ensure the stability of the protected system. This affects both the safety of the installation and its users, as well as the operating costs (link). Damage resulting from overvoltages is not covered by the warranty of electronic device manufacturers, which results in additional costs related to replacement and reassembly. We notice that more and more customers notice the benefits of using protective devices, which reduce the number of repairs resulting from, for example, lightning discharges or the induction of electromagnetic pulses in cables. It is worth mentioning protective devices for industrial automation (link), which limit the risk of unplanned interruptions in the operation of machinery. In the case of such interruptions, we are dealing not only with the costs of replacing control devices, but also with the costs of downtime, e.g. of the production line.
Therefore, one may be tempted to say that the use of arresters in an installation is a kind of "insurance policy" without a specified expiry date.
