Lightning in numbers

20-06-2024

Due to the storm season, in today's post we present some interesting facts about lightning. Based on IMGW data, as many as 400,000 ground discharges were recorded over Poland in May-August 2022. Compared to this, the entire year of 2023 saw approximately 1.7 million lightning strikes. Moreover, did you know that:

  • A single lightning bolt could power a 100-watt light bulb for over three months,
  • During the discharge, the air around the lightning heats up to about 28,000 degrees Celsius, which is five times higher than the temperature on the surface of the Sun,
  • As many as 90% of lightning strikes never reach the Earth's surface, and instead it moves between the clouds.

These statistics confirm how powerful and unpredictable lightning strikes can be. Therefore, the use of surge protectors, among others, in telecommunications installations, is not only reasonable, but even necessary.
