The Extreme series surge protectors are the most effective products designed to protect devices mounted on metal structures and in industrial conditions. They should be used wherever, in addition to the risk of surges, there may be potentials between local grounding points. Such phenomena occur when LAN end devices are mounted on metal structures, such as poles, halls, or towers, where, at the moment of atmospheric discharge, a temporary impulse of equalizing current occurs between them, which closes through the wires. Despite the built-in galvanization in the form of separating transformers on the physical layer of the LAN network, the breakdown voltage is too high for the separation to be effective. The use of EXTREME series protectors on both sides of the cable introduces separation during the surge of up to 1700V, thereby reducing the risk of damage to network interfaces.

The threats described above also occur in heavy industry or railways, where the activation of heavy machines, generators, or UPSs also generates large potential differences.

High impact resistance of up to 2.5kA for each wire of the cable with direct discharge of charge to the ground prevents the destruction of electronics due to the induction of large energy in the wires or during spark jumps from other installations. The applied MOSFET technology significantly reduces the voltage that may appear on the protected side due to the dynamic resistance of the silicon components or the operation of the protection at elevated temperatures.

PTF-516R-EXT/PoE is a 16-channel surge protector for LAN, compatible with 10Base-T and 100Base-T standards. It consists of a PTU/PTF-5-RACK housing and four PTF-54-EXT/PoE modules. Shielded RJ-45 connectors on the protected and unprotected sides facilitate both adaptation to the existing system and servicing, additionally creating a continuation of the shield of the FTP cables.

The protector can be used with UTP, FTP category 5, 5e, 6, or higher cabling. In 100Mbit (100Base-T) networks, lines 4,5 and 7,8 are used solely for PoE power supply, and for the simplification of the electronic circuit, they have been grouped, which does not change the operating parameters of these networks; however, during LAN measurements using meters, shorts will be reported on these lines. Measurements of category 5e and 6 installations or higher should be performed without the participation of the PTF-516R-EXT/PoE protection. The built-in PoE power protections protect against power surges due to surges or damage to the power supply, both on the transmission pairs and on pairs 4,5 and 7,8.

Optional LK-MOUNT angle brackets allow for mounting the panel at a 45-degree angle on the rear rail of the Rack cabinet, which is beneficial when using NVR recorders in CCTV installations. This limits the length of patch cords and increases the amount of space in the Rack cabinet.

The best protection efficiency is achieved by using surge protectors at both ends of the LAN cable and properly grounding them. Typically, a multi-channel protector is used on the LAN switch side, while a 1-channel protector is used on the end device side. To balance the impact resistance of the entire LAN line, a protector from the PRO or EXT series should be used on the other side of the cable. The use of two EXTREME series protectors at both ends of the cable provides the highest level of protection but increases the series resistance of the circuit, which should be taken into account during measurements and power loss from PoE.

PTF-516R-EXT/PoE has MOSFET technology only in lines 1-2, 3-6, which is important for data transmission signals and PoE power in option A. If MOSFET technology is required in PoE power option B or A+B, protections from the PTF-616-EXT series should be used, where each protective circuit has been equipped with it.

Protectors from the EXT series should not be combined with popular patch panels using LSA (Krone) connectors due to the low impact resistance of their printed circuits.

The product is tested according to categories D1, C2, C1, B2. It is intended for use at the boundaries of LPZ0/LPZ1 zones or higher.
